With the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games Open around the corner, it’s your opportunity to shine and compete against other athletes. You’re able to complete different challenges and set new personal records. It doesn’t matter if this will be your first Open or you’ve done it before. These tips will set you up for success and help you do your best.
To step up to the challenges of the Open, accountability is needed throughout the preparation process and during the Open. Stick to your workout plan and train with a partner. Structure combined with help from a training partner will help you be honest with yourself and how well you’re progressing. It’s important to consciously and consistently make helpful choices. Doing so will help you stay on track and recover quickly should you ever stray from your game plan to experience success during the Open.
Anxiety is a real thing and it’s something many athletes experience during competition. No one wants to choke on the day they’re hoping to do their best. One way to mentally prepare yourself is to recognize that the butterflies/jitters are normal. Another way to feel ready and in control is to arrive on site early with some time to spare. It’ll help you find a place to stretch and clear your mind before competing. During your preparation, take a few minutes every night to visualize success and see yourself perform to the best of your ability.
Hydration and nutrition:
Drinking water and eating the right nutrients every day will set you up for success. Proper hydration will help your body have the fluids it needs to perform and deal with sweat loss. Pay attention to your body during each workout and throughout each day for signs of dehydration. It’ll help you know when to adjust your water intake when needed. When it comes to nutrition, focus on foods that provide you with energy, minerals, and vitamins. Doing so will reduce your chances of getting sick and keep your body strong.
Sleep and recovery:
Getting enough sleep every night is key to performing at your best. It’ll help you keep your mind clear and allow your body to properly heal from the stress of training. When you don’t get enough sleep, an increase in stress hormones like cortisol will slow down growth hormone secretion. It’s also important that you take time to stretch and foam roll. Staying loose and limber will help you move smoothly and avoid injury. Should you experience any lingering injuries and pain, don’t hesitate to seek help from a medical professional like a physical therapist.
At the end of the day, the battle of competition is with yourself. Stay positive and have as much fun throughout every workout. Take time to enjoy the environment and community of your fellow athletes.
If you’re not already following these tips, start adding them to your game plan to prepare for the Open. If the tips listed above are already a part of your training regimen, kick it up a notch to take your performance to another level.
